Biography

The Hollows formed in 2005 when neo-country songstress Kate Long and upright bassist Alex Mann started playing together. Known only as "Kate and Alex" for the first few months, the duo played various venues in Bloomington and gained a reputation for delivering sparse, winsome arrangements that deftly supported Kate's compelling songwriting and arresting vocals.

Shortly after the name was adopted, Evan Farrell joined the group as a 3rd member on guitar, lap steel and comic relief. Evan's musical stature was already monstrous: apart from honkytonkin' in Grande Rouge (with Kate), he had been a member of The Japonize Elephants, Magnolia Electric Co. and the popular indie rock group Rogue Wave. As a trio, The Hollows continued to play all around Bloomington, and recorded an album at Dan Burton's Home Grotto Studio.

After losing Evan to a house fire in Oakland, CA in December of 2007, Kate and Alex stayed away from the stage except for a couple of performances, until late 2009 when The Hollows re-grouped with new members Brad Baute on guitar, lap steel, fiddle and banjo and Pete Schreiner on drums. Brad had played in Grande Rouge with Kate and Evan as well as The Fatted Calf String Band with Alex; and Pete has built a reputation in Bloomington as one of the hardest-working multi-instrumentalists on the scene for well over a decade, playing in groups like Intro to Airlift, Panoply Academy, Turn Pale, Magnolia Electric Co., Thousand Arrows, Old Flames and most recently, The Docents.

The quartet has been hard at work over the past few months, learning new songs and polishing up old ones. A solid live show schedule and new recording sessions are all on deck, and The Hollows' understated, riveting, country-tinged reverberations have never sounded better.
